The Smart and Ready story
Format: Video - Length 05:43
When a person approaches retirement, they need to start thinking about where to
place their retirement savings. But there are so many questions....What is the best way to generate
income? How much risk should we take? Will we run out of money? Should we put our savings in the bank,
the market or in an annuity?
The Smart and Ready story is a very logical approach to retirement income planning. It is
simply based on the tried and true concept of "needs and wants". The first step in the process
is to help the client identify those expenses they "Require" to maintain a basic quality of life.
These are the expenses that must be covered no matter what - housing, food, medical etc.
In other words, we need to guarantee the client has an income for as long
as they live to cover these expenses. What better tool to use than an Annuity?
After we have identified the amount of assets needed to cover their Required income,
any remaining assets can be used to cover additional Lifestyle expenses. These
are the expenses that will provide them with an enhanced retirement of fun and entertainment.
These remaining assets will be placed in financial vehicles that respect the client's risk profile.
Naturally, this will vary widely from client to client and it will range from securities to bank
savings or might even be more annuities.
This story resonates very strongly with clients because it simply makes sense. It provides a logical
explanation as to why they should choose an annuity for some (but not all) of their retirement savings.
In a typical retirement income planning case, the assets used to cover Required income are usually
60% of the total retirement savings.
